Candidate Statement: I seek election to the open seat on the Ohio Supreme Court, eager to serve all Ohioans with strong legal credentials, well-rounded life experiences, strong work ethic, maturity, common sense and proven ability to remain independent and open minded about issues brought before the Court. As a Judge with more than 9,500 resolved cases, as a practicing attorney handling civil and criminal cases at the trial and appellate level, as a former law clerk in United States District Court, as an arbitrator and mediator, I know the work of the Courts and how it affects everyday citizens. I extensively lecture in schools, at legal seminars, to civic organizations and to Judges, and remain committed to finding ways to make the Courts work better for everyone and to maintaining a level playing field for all. With a unique perspective from the private and public sector, I bring years of work experience in retail business, in ownership and operation of my own business venture and in work as a budget analyst for the County Auditor. I keenly understand the issues facing working families, business owners and government as they balance the need for stability and infrastructure with limited resources. Born in 1951, the eldest of seven children, daughter of retired Judge Norman and Mary Fuerst, I am proud to be part of a long tradition of public service which extends back to 1940. As a wife, mother of 6 children, stepmother of 4 and grandmother, I appreciate diversity, value the individual protections we enjoy as citizens and know what is important to people in their daily lives. To date, I am honored and pleased to have been widely endorsed by more than 25 organizations which represent teachers, social workers, working men and women, lawyers, safety forces and small business. |

Candidate Statement: This is my 27th year as a lawyer and 19th as a judge. In 1985, I was elected to the Toledo Municipal Court and served there until being elected to the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas in 1988. I currently sit on the 6th District Court of Appeals, covering eight counties in northwest Ohio. Serving on the municipal, common pleas and appellate benches has given me a broad range of knowledge about the judicial system from cases ranging from minor traffic violations to those involving the death penalty. I’ve heard over 15,000 cases, written over 1,000 opinions, including 150 published opinions, and handled more than 250 jury trials. My judicial philosophy is one of restraint. I believe in the separation of powers, always giving proper deference to the legislature. Judges should interpret the law and not use the bench for a launching pad for political activism. My record shows that I try to be open-minded and even-handed. While I can’t promise future case results, I can promise that all parties before me will be listened to and their arguments will be fully considered. I’ll make as unbiased and impartial a decision as I can in every case. To date, my campaign for Ohio Supreme Court is endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police, Toledo Firefighters Local 92, NFIB/Ohio, Ohio Farm Bureau, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association, Ohio Real Estate Investors Association, Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, Toledo Police Command Officers’ Association, Ohio Opthamological Society, Ohio Manufacturers’ Association and Friends of Ohio Hospitals. My husband, Robert, and I live in Toledo. We have two grown children, both attorneys. Our son, Josh, served in the US Army, including eight months in Iraq. Mara, our daughter, and her husband also live in Toledo with their three children. |
