Question 2: No, the skills of an appellate judge are distinct.  Appellate judges must have superior research, analytical and writing skills, and must be intellectually nimble in order to analyze a wide variety of legal issues.  Demonstrated legal excellence, a breadth of legal and appellate experience as an attorney are most important.

Age: 44

Education: Kent Sate University, University of Akron School of Law

Occupation:  Presiding Judge Ninth District Court of Appeals, Elected 1998, previously judge, Akron Municipal Court And assistant county prosecutor.

Question 1: My three priorities are to:
  1. Fairly, intelligently, and impartially decide the cases that come before me based upon the law.
  2. Improve public confidence in the judicial system through public education (awareness, e.g. Our program of holding court sessions in local schools)
  3. Implement a mediation program.

Question 2: I feel prior judicial experience is very important.  An appellate judge reviews a trial judge’s decision for error and determines whether he acted unreasonably.  Without prior judicial experience in making those decisions, the appellate judge lacks a valuable tool in evaluating the reasonableness and ramifications of the decision.
